For soloing old raids and dungeons, Blood Death Knight and Vengeance Demon Hunter are the strongest farming classes, thanks to self-healing that scales with damage taken. Retribution Paladin, Brewmaster Monk and Balance Druid follow close behind. Any max-level character clears content from two expansions back — tank specs matter only for older raids with heavy mechanics.
The real question behind "best class for old content farming" is usually one of three: what survives the nastiest legacy bosses, what kills trash fastest, and what covers the most farms per hour of play. Those have different answers.
Quick pick by farming goal
| Goal | Best picks | Why |
| Hardest solo raid bosses | Blood DK, Vengeance DH | Damage taken feeds healing; ignores most enrage and burst checks |
| Fast trash clears / gold farming | Balance Druid, Havoc DH, Frost Mage | Pull-everything AoE with mobility to skip packs |
| Transmog runs on many alts | Retribution Paladin, Brewmaster Monk | Strong solo damage plus real self-sustain, no gear babysitting |
| Combining farms with node routes | Druid (Travel Form), any class with a fast mount | Movement between spawn points is the actual bottleneck |
| Fishing, herbs, ore, pet battles | Class does not matter | Only your route, professions and mount speed matter |
Why the tank specs win
- Self-healing scales with incoming damage. Blood DK's Death Strike and Vengeance's soul fragments both convert punishment into health. On old bosses that hit for a fixed, un-scaled amount, that loop is nearly unbreakable.
- Legacy raids still apply real mechanics. Bosses that stack a debuff, place a bleed or demand you eat a hit have killed plenty of well-geared DPS. Sustain solves those; raw damage doesn't.
- Solo damage on tanks is fine now. You aren't racing a timer in a raid from three expansions ago. Slightly slower kills cost you seconds, not runs.
- Fewer resets. One character that never dies beats a glass cannon that wipes on a random pull and re-runs the whole instance.
When your class stops mattering
Content two or more expansions old scales down hard. From that point, a fresh max-level character in questing gear can flatten most dungeons and normal-difficulty raids regardless of spec. Class choice only re-enters the picture for genuinely stubborn targets: mythic-difficulty legacy bosses, a handful of Legion and Battle for Azeroth encounters with mechanics that scale, and anything requiring you to survive a scripted one-shot.
What's the best class for old raid transmog farming?
Blood Death Knight, for the same reason it wins everywhere else: it can face-tank almost anything you point it at and never stops to eat or drink. If you're farming across many characters, spread the runs — most legacy raid appearances are locked per character per week, so five alts doing one run each beats one alt doing five.
Is there a best class for farming old content for gold?
Balance Druid and Havoc Demon Hunter are the practical choices. Gold from old content comes from clearing trash and vendoring or auctioning drops, so throughput per hour is what pays. Druid also doubles as your gathering character thanks to Travel Form, which quietly saves more time than any damage difference.
Do I need max-level gear to solo old content?
No. Level matters far more than item level for legacy scaling. A freshly capped character in whatever gear the levelling process handed you will clear content from two expansions back without issue. Save the gear upgrades for the recent-tier bosses that actually resist you.
What about Classic — same answer?
Not at all. Classic has no legacy scaling, so nothing is truly "old content" you outgear by a full expansion. There, farming is about specific specs on specific routes: mages for AoE grinds, hunters and druids for sustained solo pulls. Treat it as a separate question entirely.
The honest trade-off
Levelling a dedicated farming alt is the real cost, not the farming itself. If you already have a Blood DK or Vengeance DH parked at cap, use it. If you'd be starting from zero, a Retribution Paladin or Balance Druid on your existing roster will get you 90% of the result today, versus a project that eats several evenings.
If levelling that farming alt is what's blocking you, PewPewShop's Leveling 1–80 by Class starts from EUR 22.4, and on the Classic side character levelling starts from EUR 2.99 — handled by vetted human players, and our coaches are happy to walk you through a solo route on your own character instead if you'd rather learn it.
