Legacy dungeons can be reset on demand — up to 10 instance resets per hour — while legacy raids are locked to a weekly reset. That single rule shapes every transmog route: dungeons are for grinding the same boss over and over in one sitting, raids are for a weekly circuit across many characters. Classic, Burning Crusade and Wrath dungeons give the densest appearance drops per minute at max level.

Quick facts before you start

  • Instance cap: 10 instances per hour, 30 per day (soft account limit). Hitting it locks you out with an error until the oldest entry ages off.
  • Reset a dungeon manually: leave the instance, right-click your own portrait, choose Reset all instances. Raids you are saved to cannot be reset this way.
  • Raid lockouts: weekly, rolling over on the regional reset day (Tuesday in NA, Wednesday in EU).
  • Loot filter: set difficulty appropriately and turn on the appearance filter in your bags so already-collected items are obvious.
  • Class matters: plate-wearing appearances only drop for characters that can use them in some older instances, so a mixed-armor stable of alts collects faster.

A practical dungeon transmog route

  1. Pick a tier, not a dungeon. Burning Crusade and Wrath instances are the sweet spot: short, soloable, and packed with distinct models that never got reused.
  2. Clear only to the bosses that drop what you want. Most trash in old content drops nothing worth collecting; skipping it doubles your runs per hour.
  3. Reset immediately after the last useful boss. Do not walk out and re-enter — reset, then re-enter. Track your count so you don't burn the hourly cap early.
  4. Chain 4-5 dungeons in one zone. Hellfire Citadel, Auchindoun and the Coilfang complex each stack multiple instances at one flight point, which cuts travel to almost nothing.
  5. Do the weekly raid circuit separately. Because raids are weekly, run them once across every alt you have rather than trying to farm one raid repeatedly.

How many old dungeons can I run in an hour?

Ten. The instance counter is per account and rolling, so it frees up an hour after each individual entry rather than all at once. If you hit the cap mid-farm, swap to a raid you are not saved to, or run a different character's dungeon list while the timer bleeds off.

Do I need a specific class to solo old content?

Not really — most content up through Mists of Pandaria falls over to any max-level character. Self-healing specs clear faster because they never stop to eat. The bigger limiter is armor type: an item's appearance only unlocks for you if your class can equip that armor class, so a warrior and a mage collect completely different halves of the same dungeon.

Which drops are actually worth chasing?

Weapons first. Old weapon models are the most visually distinct and the hardest to substitute with a modern lookalike, and many sit on single bosses with low drop chances — exactly the kind of thing worth a dedicated reset loop. Tier sets are second: they are recognisable, complete, and unlock account-wide once collected on an eligible class.

Does looting on an alt unlock the appearance for everyone?

Yes, within the armor-type rule. Once collected, the appearance is available to every character on your account that can wear that armor class. That is why running a mixed stable — one plate, one mail, one leather, one cloth — through the same weekly raid circuit is far more efficient than repeating it on a single character.
