Yes: in World of Warcraft: Forever, transmog is opt-in per player, and Classic Mode switches it off automatically from the start. With it off you see every character, your own included, in the gear they actually have equipped. Appearances still collect in the background, so if you later change your mind and visit a transmogrifier in one of the supported cities, nothing you looted is lost.

Quick facts: how transmog works in Forever

  • Opt-in, not default. Transmog is a per-player choice. Turn it on at a transmogrifier NPC in certain cities, or leave it disabled entirely.
  • Classic Mode = off automatically. Pick Classic Mode and the game disables transmog for you without a separate menu step.
  • Opting out affects what you see. A player with transmog off sees everyone in their equipped gear. It is a view setting for you, not a rule forced on the whole group.
  • Appearances keep collecting. Disabled does not mean deleted. Looted looks are recorded regardless of your setting.
  • Hidden helm and cloak still work. Those toggles are respected even with transmog off.
  • Armor type stays honest. Plate looks only go on plate, cloth on cloth, and so on.
  • Level restrictions on appearances lift at 60. Below the cap, some looks are gated.

How appearances are collected (even in Classic Mode)

Item typeWho gets the appearance
Bind-on-pickup Uncommon or Rare dungeon dropEvery eligible looter in the group when it is looted
Epic raid dropOnly the player the item binds to
Poor or Common itemGranted on loot, no binding needed

Cosmetic-only items are rare by design. Most looks come from gear you would be wearing anyway, which is why Classic Mode players still build a collection without trying.

Can I turn transmog back on later, or is Classic Mode permanent?

Transmog is a per-player setting, and the official description is that it is either set at a transmogrifier or disabled entirely. Classic Mode simply starts you in the disabled state. Blizzard has not published a rule that locks you out of transmog for good after picking it, so treat it as a starting preference rather than a one-way door. If a later blue post adds a lock, that would be new information.

Where is the transmogrifier in WoW: Forever?

Blizzard has only said transmog is set at a transmogrifier in certain cities. The exact NPC locations have not been published, and the game does not launch until November 4, 2026 (3 p.m. Pacific). Once the beta (September 17 to October 21) and launch reveal the spots, expect them in capital cities first. Until then, any specific coordinates you see online are guesses.

Why would anyone disable transmog in Forever?

Because Forever is built to feel like WoW's first year. A big part of that era was reading a player at a glance: a warrior in mismatched greens is a fresh 60, a set of matching blues means dungeon farming, and an epic shoulder piece told a story. Classic Mode brings that back. Since the setting only changes what you see, it costs you nothing socially. Your groupmates who love their transmogs still see them.

Does turning transmog off affect gear, stats or loot?

No. Transmog in Forever is purely visual. Stats, the reworked hit and crit stats, set bonuses and dungeon loot are identical whether you show real gear or a chosen look. The one thing worth remembering is that appearances are granted on loot, so if you care about a specific dungeon set for later, you still need to be in the group when it drops.

Is Classic Mode the right pick for you?

  • Choose Classic Mode if you want the 2004-style world where gear is a status signal and nothing on screen is cosmetic.
  • Leave transmog on if you plan to chase looks from the nine new dungeons and two launch raids, or if you simply like your character to match.
  • Either way, your collection grows. Switching is a visit to a city NPC, not a re-roll.

If you would rather spend launch week playing than farming, PewPewShop's vetted human players offer Forever leveling and dungeon help as pre-orders until November 4, from Forever Leveling 1–30 (from EUR 11 gold packs aside, leveling starts from EUR 13) to the Forever Launch-Ready Pack with 1–60, pre-raid gear and 500g from EUR 219. Coaching and play-together sessions are available for anyone who wants a pro at their side rather than in their place.
