- One enormous transfer. A single deposit that dwarfs your entire earning history reads very differently from gold that arrives in steps.
- Chain contamination. If the gold came through an account Blizzard later actions, everything it touched gets reviewed. This is why gold sourced from hacked accounts is the real danger, not the trade itself.
- Speed after purchase. Gold in, immediate mass-spending on a single expensive item, is a tidy little timeline for a reviewer.
- Whisper spam and buyer trails. Advertising that you are buying, in trade chat or Discord, does you no favours.

Why does Reddit say people rarely get banned?
Because most buyers never post about it, and Blizzard's usual first response to a suspicious transfer is a gold rollback or a trade restriction rather than a permanent ban. So the visible sample on r/wow skews toward "nothing happened to me." The people who lost a ten-year-old account usually leave the game rather than write a thread about it.
Treat Reddit vendor recommendations as a starting point, not proof. Threads promoting specific sellers are frequently seeded, and account age tells you nothing.
Is the WoW Token really the only safe way?
On retail, yes — it is the only method Blizzard sanctions, and it cannot get you actioned because you are buying through their store. The catch is that its gold value is set by the market and you cannot choose your price. On Classic, Season of Discovery and Pandaria Classic there is no Token at all, which is exactly why the demand for third-party gold is concentrated there.
How much gold is "too much" to receive at once?
There is no published threshold, and anyone quoting you an exact safe number is guessing. The useful rule is relative, not absolute: a transfer that fits your character's level, playtime and existing wealth is unremarkable, while one that multiplies your lifetime gold overnight is not. Splitting a large order across several deliveries and a few days is the single most common risk-reduction step.
What happens if you do get caught?
First offence is usually the gold removed plus a temporary suspension or trade squelch. Repeat cases, or an account tied to a wider fraud chain, escalate to permanent closure — including everything you legitimately earned. Appeals rarely succeed once a transfer is traced.
