WoW Classic name changes are a paid Battle.net service, not a free in-game option, and they run roughly $10-15 USD depending on region. Buy the Name Change from the in-game Shop or Battle.net's WoW Services page, choose the character, and you'll be prompted for a new name at the character-select screen. It applies immediately, and each purchase covers one rename.

  1. Log into WoW Classic and open the Shop from the game menu (or go to your Battle.net account's World of Warcraft Services page in a browser).
  2. Select Name Change and pick the character you want to rename.
  3. Complete the purchase with your Battle.net payment method or balance.
  4. Return to the character-select screen. The character now shows a rename prompt.
  5. Type your new name. If it's taken or breaks the naming policy, you'll be asked again — the purchase isn't consumed until a name is accepted.
  6. Log in. Guild roster, friends lists and mail update to the new name automatically.

  • Cost: about $10-15 USD / €10-15 per change; exact pricing shows at checkout for your region.
  • Cooldown: after a rename you generally can't buy another for that character for a few days.
  • Works on: Classic Era, Hardcore, Season of Discovery and Cataclysm Classic characters.
  • Doesn't change: your realm, faction, race, or Battle.net BattleTag — those are separate services.
  • Free renames only happen when Blizzard forces them (naming-policy violation, or a realm merge causing duplicate names).

Can you change your name in WoW Classic for free?

Not on demand. The only free renames are ones Blizzard hands you: a policy-violation flag that locks your character until you rename it, or a duplicate-name conflict after realms are connected or merged. In both cases the rename prompt just appears at character select with no purchase needed.

Deleting and re-rolling is technically free, but you lose the character's level, gear and gold — for anything past the low levels the paid change is far cheaper than the hours.

Is your old name reserved after a name change?

No. Once you rename, the old name is released back to the realm's pool and anyone can take it. If you're renaming a main and want the old name back later, there's no guarantee it'll still be free.

Why won't the game accept my new name?

Three usual reasons: the name is already in use on that realm, it contains numbers, spaces or special characters, or it trips Blizzard's naming policy (real-world names, offensive terms, references to titles or ranks). Classic also enforces a length cap of roughly 12 characters. Try a variant with different vowels or a slight spelling change — accented characters are allowed on European realms.

Does a name change affect my guild, mail or achievements?

No. Everything stays attached to the character, not the name: guild rank, gold, bags, mail in transit, reputation and any progress carry over untouched. Friends who had you on their list see the new name automatically. Only third-party sites and logs need a manual update.
