Learn Enchanting from any Enchanting trainer in a capital city — Stormwind's Mage Quarter, Orgrimmar's Valley of Spirit, Ironforge, Undercity, Darnassus or Thunder Bluff. Then level it by disenchanting green-quality gear for dust, essences and shards, and burning those mats on enchants applied to cheap vendor weapons. Enchanting has no gathering half, so materials come from disenchanting or the auction house.
The skill-up route in short
- Talk to the trainer and learn Apprentice Enchanting. You get the Disenchant ability immediately — it's a spell, not a passive.
- Buy or farm greens. Low-level green weapons and armor from the auction house are the cheapest source of Strange Dust and Lesser Magic Essence.
- Enchant vendor gear. Buy the cheapest white weapons or bracers from a general goods vendor, apply your skill-up enchant, then disenchant the result to recover part of the mats. This loop is the backbone of the whole profession.
- Return to a trainer at each rank — Journeyman, Expert, Artisan — and pick up every new recipe you can afford, because trainer enchants are your reliable skill-ups.
- Watch the orange-to-yellow window. Once a recipe turns yellow it stops guaranteeing a point; move to the next available orange recipe rather than grinding a yellow one.
What makes Enchanting different
- No gathering profession attached. Mining feeds Blacksmithing, Herbalism feeds Alchemy — Enchanting feeds itself by destroying gear.
- Bind-on-pickup rings. Enchanters get self-only ring enchants at higher skill, a permanent stat edge no other profession gives.
- Disenchant rolls in dungeons. Being the group's enchanter means greens nobody wants become your mats instead of vendor silver.
- It is expensive. Most players fund Enchanting with a gathering profession on an alt or with gold on hand.
Which professions pair best with Enchanting?
Tailoring is the classic partner: you craft green cloth pieces from mats you gather yourself, then disenchant them straight into dust and essences. It closes the materials loop without ever touching the auction house.
The other common pairing is a pure gold engine — Herbalism or Mining on the same character, sold on the auction house to bankroll enchanting mats. Less elegant, but it works on any class.
Where do I find an Enchanting trainer?
Every faction capital has one. Alliance enchanters train in Stormwind's Mage Quarter and in Ironforge's Mystic Ward; Horde enchanters train in Orgrimmar's Valley of Spirit and Undercity's Magic Quarter. Darnassus and Thunder Bluff have trainers too.
Ask a guard in any capital and they will flag the trainer's location on your map — the fastest way to find one without alt-tabbing.
Is Enchanting worth the gold in Classic?
Yes, if you plan to raid or you enjoy the auction house. Enchanters sell enchants for tips at the trade district, supply their raid group, and keep exclusive ring enchants for themselves. It's one of the few professions that stays profitable deep into a server's lifespan.
If you only want your own gear enchanted, it is cheaper to tip someone else's enchanter than to level the profession from scratch.
How long does it take to max Enchanting?
A focused player with the mats already stockpiled can go from zero to maximum skill in a few hours of clicking. The real cost is gathering the dust and essences — that's days of farming or a serious auction house budget, not an evening.
