You can't strip an embellishment off a piece of gear — WoW has never given players a remove button for it. The three real fixes are: unequip a piece so you're only wearing two embellished items, have a crafter recraft the item with a different optional reagent, or replace the piece outright. An embellishment is baked into the item, not an enchant sitting on top of it.

Your three actual options

  1. Unequip instead of remove. The limit applies to what you are wearing, not what you own. If the game blocks a third embellished piece, take one off and the block disappears instantly. Nothing is lost, and the item keeps its embellishment for later.
  2. Recraft the piece. On crafted gear, a recraft is the one recognised way to change which optional reagents sit on an item — including the embellishment reagent. You need a crafter who knows the recipe and the reagents for the new embellishment; the item itself survives.
  3. Replace the piece. If it can't be recrafted (drops, quest rewards, anything not player-crafted), the embellishment is permanent. Slot a different item into that spot and move on.

Do embellished items in your bags count? No — equipped only
Can an enchant overwrite it?No — separate systems

Why does the game say I can only equip two embellished items?

Embellishments are strong, so they carry a hard equipped cap of two. The third piece simply refuses to go on, and the error names the reason. It is not a bug or a missing unlock — unequip one of the two you're already wearing and the third slots in fine.

Can I recraft gear to swap the embellishment?

Yes, for crafted gear. Recrafting reopens the optional reagent slots on an existing item, which is where the embellishment lives, so a crafter can put a different one on the same piece rather than starting from scratch. Bring the mats for the embellishment you actually want before you hand the item over.

Does Midnight change how embellishments work?

The system carried forward from Dragonflight through The War Within with the same two-item cap and the same no-removal rule. Whether Midnight adjusts the cap, the reagent list or adds a removal option is not something I can confirm — check the current in-game tooltip and your profession UI before planning a full set around it.

Is an embellishment the same as an enchant?

No. Enchants can be overwritten by applying a new one; embellishments cannot. They sit in different parts of the item, count against different limits, and an embellished piece can still take its normal enchant on top.

If your embellishment problem is really a gear problem — the piece you want to drop is the only thing keeping your item level up — a vetted human player can help you replace it faster.
