The best Warlock race in WoW Classic is Gnome for Alliance and Orc for Horde. Gnome's Expansive Mind gives 5% more Intellect (bigger mana pool and slightly more spell crit) plus Escape Artist to break roots. Orc's Hardiness adds 25% stun resistance and Command boosts pet damage by 5%. Undead is the strong PvP alternative thanks to Will of the Forsaken.

Warlock races in Classic Era at a glance

Only four races can roll a Warlock on Classic Era, Hardcore and 20th Anniversary realms: Human and Gnome on Alliance, Orc and Undead on Horde. The gaps between them are small in raids and larger in PvP, so pick by how you plan to spend most of your time.

Why Gnome wins for Alliance

A Warlock's whole kit runs on mana and Life Tap, and Expansive Mind stretches that pool by 5% at every gear level. It is the only Classic racial that directly improves caster output. Escape Artist is a free trinket against every root and slow in the game, which matters in battlegrounds and in world PvP where a Frost Mage or Hunter can otherwise lock you down. Human's Perception is a nice tool against Rogues, and Diplomacy speeds up the Argent Dawn and Cenarion Circle rep grinds, but neither touches your damage.

Orc vs Undead for Horde

Orc is the pick if you want the safest all-round Warlock. Hardiness resists a quarter of all stuns, which is the single most common thing that kills a caster in Classic PvP, and Command gives your Succubus, Felhunter or Imp a flat 5% damage bump that shows up on every meter. Blood Fury is a melee-only buff you will never press.

Undead trades that for Will of the Forsaken, a hard counter to Priest and Warlock fears and Hunter sleeps. Warlocks already have Fel Domination and Soul Link to survive, so many high-rated players still prefer Undead for the extra escape and the 10 Shadow resistance. In raids the two are effectively tied.

Does Warlock race matter for PvE in Classic?

Barely. The Intellect from Gnome and the pet damage from Orc are each worth well under 1% of total damage once you are in raid gear. Gear, consumables, Curse assignments and your Shadow Bolt uptime matter far more than the character sheet you rolled on. Pick the race whose racial you will actually use outside the raid.

What is the best Warlock race for PvP in Classic?

Orc for stun resistance, Undead for fear immunity, Gnome for root breaks. If you mainly duel and world-PvP against Rogues and Warriors, Orc edges ahead. If you fight other casters and Priests, Undead is the stronger answer. Gnome is the clear Alliance answer either way, since Human offers nothing in a real fight beyond spotting a stealthed opponent a second earlier.

Does the best Warlock race change in TBC or MoP Classic?

Yes. TBC Classic adds Blood Elf to the Horde, and Arcane Torrent's short silence plus mana return makes it a top Warlock race for Arena. Gnome and Orc keep their standing. MoP Classic opens far more options, including Troll with Berserking as a strong raiding choice and Goblin with Rocket Jump for mobility. Everything above applies specifically to Classic Era, Hardcore and Anniversary realms.

Which Warlock race is best for Hardcore Classic?

Gnome on Alliance and Undead on Horde. Escape Artist and Will of the Forsaken both save lives in situations where a single root or fear would otherwise be fatal, and on Hardcore survival tools beat damage racials every time.
