How to get on the Classic Era PTR

  1. Open the Battle.net desktop app and select World of Warcraft.
  2. Click the version dropdown near the Play button and choose the Public Test Realm option.
  3. Install it — it's a fresh download, so budget the disk space and time.
  4. Launch, log in with your normal Battle.net account, and check whether character copy is currently open.
  5. Copy your Classic Era character if the option is live, or create a test character if templates are offered.
  6. Play the content being tested, then report anything broken on the official PTR forums or via the in-game bug report tool.

Do I need a subscription to use the Classic Era PTR?

Yes. Access follows your normal WoW game time — an active subscription covers the PTR at no extra cost, but a lapsed account won't get you in. There is no separate PTR fee and no separate purchase.

Does PTR progress transfer to live Classic Era realms?

No. The PTR is a sandbox. Anything you loot, level or bank there disappears when the test realm is wiped or closed, and it never appears on your live character. What's the difference between the PTR and a Beta or Season realm?

A PTR tests near-final patches for content that already exists — Classic Era fixes, seasonal changes, tuning passes. Season realms (like the seasonal Classic modes) are live, permanent-progress realms you actually play on, not test servers.

Is the Classic Era PTR worth logging into?

If you raid seriously or push a hardcore character, yes. It's the cheapest way to learn a new boss, test a consumable rotation or check whether a class change breaks your build — before it costs you a raid night or a hardcore life. Casual players lose little by skipping it and reading patch notes instead.
