WoW Classic Plus is the name for a version of Vanilla-era World of Warcraft that receives brand-new content — zones, raids, dungeons, quests and class changes — instead of progressing into The Burning Crusade. Blizzard's closest real take on the idea so far is Season of Discovery: level-60 Classic with rune abilities, reworked level-up raids and new endgame bosses. A fully detailed standalone Classic Plus beyond that is not something I can confirm yet.

What the term actually means

The phrase started as a community wish, years before Blizzard used anything like it. The pitch was simple: keep the slow, group-dependent Vanilla design — talent trees, 40-man raids, no flying, dangerous open world — and build forward from it along a different path than 2007's Burning Crusade. Think finished versions of cut zones, new dungeons in the existing continents, more raid tiers after Naxxramas, and quality-of-life fixes that don't turn the game into Retail.

Season of Discovery was Blizzard's way of testing that appetite without committing to a permanent product. It shipped the old world with staged level caps (25, 40, 50, then 60), added runes that gave classes roles they never had in 2005 (tank Warlocks, healer Mages, DPS Shamans), and turned low-level dungeons into short raids. Player numbers were strong early, which is why "Classic Plus" now gets discussed as a real possibility rather than a forum dream.

Is Season of Discovery the same thing as Classic Plus?

Not quite. SoD is a seasonal experiment, which means its changes were designed to be tested fast and, if needed, abandoned. A true Classic Plus would be a permanent game mode with a content roadmap. The honest summary: SoD is the prototype, and whatever Blizzard calls Classic Plus will borrow its best-received systems — most likely the reworked raids and some class changes — while leaving out the things that drew the loudest complaints, such as power creep and heavy phase-gating.

When is WoW Classic Plus coming out?

There is no release date I can confirm. Blizzard tends to reveal Classic-side plans at BlizzCon and in the Classic development updates that follow, so those are the sources worth checking. If you have read a specific launch window on a fan site, remember it may be newer than what I can verify — or simply guesswork. Until Blizzard publishes a date, the practical answer is: play Anniversary or Era realms now, and expect Classic Plus to arrive as its own realm type rather than as an update to those.

Will my Season of Discovery character carry over?

Blizzard's pattern with seasonal realms has been to offer transfers to a permanent Classic Era realm once a season ends, rather than into the next experiment. Carrying a SoD character straight into Classic Plus has not been confirmed. If you want a character that definitely persists, level on a Classic Era or Anniversary realm; a level-60 there keeps its value regardless of what Classic Plus turns out to be.

How is Classic Plus different from the Anniversary realms?

Anniversary realms are fresh, faithful Vanilla with a fixed timeline: they progress through the original raid tiers and then move to The Burning Crusade Classic, just as the original Classic realms did in 2021. Classic Plus would deliberately stop that timeline at level 60 and branch off into content that never existed. If you want the authentic 2004–2006 experience, Anniversary is the right pick; if you want Vanilla's feel with new surprises, Classic Plus is the mode to wait for.

What to do while you wait

  • Level a character on a Classic Era or Anniversary realm — it's the safest long-term investment.
  • Learn Vanilla raid mechanics now; Classic Plus is almost certain to build on Molten Core-to-Naxxramas fundamentals.
  • Bank gold and profession recipes; every Classic variant so far has kept the same economy rules.
  • Follow Blizzard's official Classic announcements rather than leak accounts.
