There is no official, Blizzard-approved place to sell WoW gold for real money. Selling gold to third-party sites violates the World of Warcraft Terms of Use and can end in a permanent account closure, and the sale itself carries no buyer protection. The only sanctioned way to convert gold into value is the WoW Token, which buys game time or Battle.net Balance — never cash.

The quick version

  • Official route: the WoW Token. Buy it on the Auction House with in-game gold, redeem it for 30 days of game time or Battle.net Balance. That Balance stays inside Blizzard's ecosystem — it does not become money in your bank.
  • Cash route: only third-party marketplaces and gold-selling sites. All of them operate against the Terms of Use, on both retail and Classic.
  • What's actually at risk: the selling account, plus anything linked to it on the same Battle.net login — retail, Classic, other Blizzard titles, and years of collection progress.
  • Trade sanctions: Blizzard also reverses gold transfers it flags. A seller can lose the gold and get nothing.
  • No recourse: a payout dispute with an unofficial buyer has no arbitrator. There is nobody to appeal to.

Can I sell WoW Classic gold or Season of Discovery gold instead?

The same Terms of Use cover every version — Classic Era, Hardcore, Season of Discovery, Cataclysm and Mists of Pandaria Classic alike. "WoW Classic gold selling" is not a loophole; if anything, Classic economies are smaller, so unusual gold movements between characters stand out more clearly to Blizzard's trade monitoring.

Classic also has no WoW Token in most incarnations, which removes even the sanctioned conversion route. If your goal is to stop sitting on a pile of gold you'll never spend, the safest exit is in-game: BoEs, mats, consumables, mounts, and gear for alts.

What actually gets an account banned?

Blizzard doesn't publish its detection rules, and anyone who claims to know them exactly is guessing. What's clear from the policy itself is that both sides of a real-money gold trade are in breach — buyer and seller — and that penalties scale from a gold rollback and temporary suspension to a permanent closure for repeat activity.

The other honest risk is the counterparty. Handing your gold to a stranger who promises a bank transfer afterwards is an unsecured trade. There is no escrow, no chargeback, and no support ticket that will bring it back.

Is the WoW Token worth it if I can't get cash?

For most players, yes — it's the one route with zero account risk. If you're farming gold anyway, a Token turns that gold into a subscription you'd otherwise be paying for, which is real money saved even if it never lands in your wallet. The Token price floats with supply and demand on your region's Auction House, so it costs more gold in some weeks than others.

What if I need gold rather than want to get rid of it?

That's the far more common situation, and it has a clean answer: buy the gold you need instead of grinding for months, and skip the sketchy side of the market entirely. Prices scale with the version you play — WoW Gold from EUR 18, WoW Gold — EU Realm Tiers from EUR 16, Pandaria Classic Gold from EUR 36, SoD Gold from EUR 16, and WoW Gold — Bulk from EUR 160 for larger amounts.
