On a fresh WoW: Forever realm, pick Herbalism plus Mining for your first character. Gathering pairs earn the most gold from launch day, cost nothing to level, and feed every crafter on the server. Switch to a crafting profession such as Engineering, Enchanting or Alchemy on a second character once you have a gold buffer and the market has settled.
Quick facts: professions in WoW: Forever
- Launch: November 4, 2026, 3 p.m. Pacific. Level cap is 60 for good, so the level-60 economy matters more than in any expansion-based version.
- Profession revamp: Blizzard says professions are updated in Forever, but skill caps, new recipes and reagent changes are not published yet. Everything below assumes the original level-60 roster of primary and secondary skills.
- Legacy perks (professions branch): Working Overtime gives +4% skill-up chance per rank; Dedicated Study is a perk on a 23-hour cooldown. Legacy points are account-wide and earned through challenges, including the Increasing Tradeskills category.
- Camping: a new system where you craft a campfire outdoors and other players can join it for tradeskill buffs.
- Racial change: Tauren Cultivation now grows bonus herbs without needing Herbalism.
- New zones to gather in: Zephras Isle (1–12), the Riverglades (30–45, Eastern Kingdoms) and Mount Hyjal (endgame).
Pick by goal, not by class
| Goal | Best pick | Why |
| Gold from day one | Herbalism + Mining | Every crafter needs your nodes; no upkeep cost |
| Skinning-heavy leveling | Skinning + Mining or Herbalism | Leather sells steadily to Leatherworkers while you quest |
| Raiding at 60 | Engineering + a gathering skill | Explosives, trinkets and utility tools for Hyjal Summit and Barrow Deeps prep |
| Self-sufficient consumables | Alchemy + Herbalism | Flasks, elixirs and potions for raid nights starting December 9 |
| Passive income at cap | Enchanting | Disenchanting dungeon greens becomes a steady gold stream |
| Reputation runs | Anything + Cooking & First Aid | Secondaries are free, useful, and count toward Legacy challenges |
Why gathering first on a fresh realm?
In the first weeks, raw materials are scarce and demand is huge. Every Blacksmith, Engineer and Alchemist on a new server is racing to 300 and buying ore and herbs at inflated prices. Two gathering skills cost you nothing but time you already spend walking between quests, and you can bank a comfortable cushion before you ever reach Mount Hyjal.
Crafting professions have the opposite curve: they eat gold early and pay out only at 60, once the recipes people actually want are unlocked. Starting a crafter on day one usually means being broke at level 40.
Should I go Engineering in Forever?
Yes, if your plan is raiding or PvP at 60. Engineering has always been the utility profession for dungeons, battlegrounds and raids, and Forever adds new content that rewards exactly that toolkit: nine new dungeons, the 15v15 Darkspear Islands battleground, and the two launch raids in December. Pair it with Mining so you are not buying every bar off the auction house.
The caveat: Blizzard has said professions are being updated, and Engineering is the one most likely to gain or lose specific gadgets. Treat the recipe list as unknown until beta data lands.
Do the Legacy perks change the choice?
Not the choice, but the cost. Working Overtime raises your skill-up chance by 4% per rank, and it is account-wide, so every alt you level after the first climbs professions faster. Dedicated Study sits on a 23-hour cooldown. Exact caps and full perk lists are not published yet, but the direction is clear: Forever wants you leveling more characters, so plan your professions across your roster rather than cramming everything on one.
Camping matters here too. Campfires that others join give tradeskill buffs, which makes group gathering sessions in the Riverglades or Hyjal a real thing rather than a solo grind.
Secondary skills: worth it?
Always take Cooking, First Aid and Fishing. They are free, do not use a profession slot, and First Aid in particular saves gold for classes without self-healing. Completing tradeskill challenges also feeds your Legacy point total, which unlocks account-wide cosmetics like the Spectral Bear mount.
What we still do not know
- Whether the 300 skill cap or the profession specialisations change.
- Which recipes come from the new dungeons and zones.
- How Camping buffs stack with existing profession bonuses.
