Quick facts: the "item was not found" error
The error comes from a player-reported bug in the official WoW Forever Bug Report forum. It is not a rule about what you are allowed to buy. As of November 8, 2026, Blizzard had not replied in that thread, and the bug was not on the known-issues list Blizzard posted on November 5.

- Symptom: you click Buy on a listing and get "The item was not found". After a refresh, the same listing is still there.
- Where it shows up: price lines with many copies of the same item. Players named Linen Bags, Red Linen Bags, Sturdy Quarterstaves and Silver Rods.
- Likely cause, per players: the buy aims at the first item of the stack, which another player bought a moment earlier.
- Status: the forum thread was still active on November 8. Blizzard has posted no fix and no comment there.
- Related report: mail from your auction sales can arrive late.

Is it a bug, or did someone just buy the item first?
Usually it is both. In a busy line, someone else buys the first item and your click still points at it. The bug is that the Auction House does not move your purchase on to the next identical item, so you keep failing while the listing looks available.
This explains why players report the error mostly on cheap, popular goods like Linen Bags. Rare items in thin lines rarely have a crowd fighting over the first copy.

If every purchase fails, not only on busy lines, close the Auction House, relog and try a different auctioneer. If nothing goes through in another city either, file an in-game bug report or contact Blizzard support.
Note the item, the price line and the time of each failure: that is what support needs to trace a purchase. If the error only appears on certain busy lines, you are looking at the listing bug players report.
Why haven't I received the gold from my auction sales?
Two separate problems can cause this. Players report that auction sale mail is arriving late. A different set of reports says some mailboxes do not open at all, even when mail is waiting. That mailbox problem has been reported near the Auction House in Stormwind and Orgrimmar and by the bank in Ironforge.
For the mailbox problem, players report that walking to another mailbox works. Examples are the canal mailbox in Stormwind, the inn mailbox in Ironforge, and any mailbox in Orgrimmar away from the Auction House. Logging out and back in also helps. One player says /reload does not.
Why does listing an item cost at least 1 silver?
Right now every Auction House listing in Forever carries a deposit of at least 1 silver. You get the deposit back if the item sells and lose it if you cancel or the auction expires. Above that minimum, the deposit is 5%, 20% or 60% of the vendor price for 2, 8 or 24 hours.
Kris Zierhut said in the Crix interview that the minimum deposit is going back to one copper. He gave no date. Until that change lands, selling very cheap greys and whites to a vendor usually beats listing them.
Will Blizzard fix the Auction House error?
As of November 8, 2026, Blizzard had not acknowledged this error in the bug thread. Forever is getting hotfixes almost every day, though, and launch issues such as respawn and quest problems were hotfixed within days. Keep using the workarounds and file an in-game bug report each time it happens. A forum MVP gave the same advice for the related mailbox problem.

What does "The item was not found" mean on the WoW Forever Auction House?
It means your purchase targeted an auction that is no longer available. Players say the buy goes to the first item in a stack of identical listings, and someone else often bought that one already. The line keeps showing as available, which is why it looks like a bug. Refreshing, retrying, or using a different auctioneer usually gets the purchase through.
Do I lose gold when a WoW Forever auction purchase fails?
A failed purchase means you did not buy the item. Check your gold before and after a failed attempt. If gold is missing and you received no item or mail, file an in-game bug report or a support ticket with the time and item name, so Blizzard can trace the transaction.
