What the Experience Preset changes

The Experience Preset is a set of starting settings you choose the first time you log into WoW: Forever, before you pick a ruleset. Each preset flips the same six settings in opposite directions.

Who should pick Classic, and who should pick Enhanced

Pick Classic if you played in 2004–2006 and want that exact feel back: reading quest text to find objectives, separate bags, everyone in the gear they really wear. Pick Enhanced if you are new to old-school WoW, came over from Modern, or just want to level without opening a website every ten minutes.

Quest markers matter most here. In Forever, quests are spread across more than 1,000 new quests from 1 to 60, and with Classic's blobs turned off you rely on the quest text and your own map reading. Some players love that. Others lose a whole evening looking for one cave. The difference shows most in new areas like the Riverglades and Zephras Isle, where nobody has old memories to fall back on.

Does Classic or Enhanced change how fast I level?

Neither preset changes XP, mob stats or quest rewards. In practice Enhanced players finish quests a little faster because objective areas are marked on the map, while Classic players spend more time reading and searching.

If speed is your goal, Enhanced is the efficient pick. If immersion is the point of playing Forever, the extra minutes are part of the fun.

Should I choose HD or SD character models?

The HD or SD choice only affects how characters look, and you can make it per character as well as through the preset. Each new character gets its own model choice at creation. You can switch later in Options or at a Barbershop.

That means a Classic-preset player can still make one character in HD, and the other way around. Keep in mind that the Skyborne have no SD models yet: Blizzard says SD Skyborne models and druid forms are in development for early 2027.

What happens to transmog if I pick Classic?

With Classic, transmog is off, so everyone appears in their equipped gear, but your appearances keep collecting in the background. Turning transmog on later loses nothing.

Blizzard confirmed that Classic Mode at first launch disables transmog automatically while still recording appearances. When you want it, switch it on at a transmogrifier in certain cities, or turn it on through the preset.

Can I switch presets after I start playing?

Yes. The preset is a starting point, not a lock, and you can reapply either one at any time under Options, then System, then Preset. Blizzard built it so you can try one and change your mind.

The common move is to start on Enhanced, then reapply Classic once you know the zones. Players returning from Classic Era sometimes do the reverse after their first maze of unmarked quests.

Does the preset affect my ruleset or my name?

No. The preset is chosen before the ruleset screen and only covers client settings. Your ruleset (Normal, PvP, Roleplaying or Roleplay-PvP at launch) and your two-part name are separate choices.

Changing rulesets later needs a character transfer. Changing presets needs a single menu click, so spend your thinking time on the ruleset.

Whichever preset you pick, leveling and early dungeons are where most players get stuck. Getting a single bracket done can be cheap, from from 9 EUR.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Experience Preset in WoW: Forever?

It is a set of starting client settings you pick on your first login to WoW: Forever, before you choose a ruleset. Classic turns off HD models, quest markers, the one-bag view and transmog, and uses camera-turning binds with the classic UI layout. Enhanced turns all of them on and uses strafe binds with a centralized layout.

Can I change my WoW: Forever preset later?

Yes. The preset is a starting point, not a permanent choice. Open Options, go to System and choose Preset to apply Classic or Enhanced at any time. The selection screen only appears on your first login, so this menu is how you switch afterwards.

Which preset does Blizzard recommend for WoW: Forever?

Blizzard recommends starting with the Enhanced preset if you are unsure. It turns on quest points of interest, HD models, transmog, the one-bag view, strafe keybinds and a centralized interface. Players who want the original 2004 feel can pick Classic instead or switch to it later.

Does the Classic preset make WoW: Forever harder?

It does not change combat, XP or loot. The Classic preset only changes client settings, mainly by turning off quest markers and objective areas on the map. That means you find objectives by reading quest text, which takes longer but does not change the game's difficulty.

Do I lose transmog appearances if I play with the Classic preset?

No. Classic disables transmog, but your character still collects appearances as you loot gear. If you turn transmog on later, at a transmogrifier in certain cities or through the preset, the appearances you collected are there to use.

Can I use HD models with the Classic preset?

Yes. HD or SD models are also chosen per character at creation, and you can change them later in Options or at a Barbershop. The setting only affects appearance. The Skyborne have no SD models yet; Blizzard plans them for early 2027.
