For most Warriors in WoW Classic, Rend is not worth using in raids. It eats a global cooldown, its damage is fixed by rank rather than boosted by your attack power, and the Rage is worth far more in Heroic Strike or Sunder Armor. Rend still earns a keybind while leveling, in PvP against runners and stealthers, and to interrupt drinking or channelling.
Quick verdict by situation
| Situation | Use Rend? | Why |
| Raid DPS (Fury/Arms) | No | Global cooldown and Rage are better spent on Heroic Strike, Bloodthirst/Mortal Strike, Whirlwind |
| Raid tanking | No | Threat per Rage is poor next to Sunder Armor and Heroic Strike |
| Leveling 1-30 | Yes | Cheap damage while you wait for Rage; fine against low-armor mobs |
| World PvP / battlegrounds | Yes | Stops stealth, ticks on runners, breaks drinking and some channels |
| Dungeon trash | Situational | Only if you have spare Rage and nothing better to press |
The three reasons raiders drop it
- It does not scale. Rend's damage comes from its rank, so a Warrior in raid gear does roughly the same Rend damage as one in dungeon blues. Every other button scales with attack power and weapon damage.
- Armor and immunity. Rend is physical bleed damage, and plenty of raid targets are immune to bleeds outright — mechanicals and elementals in particular. A skill that silently does nothing on some bosses is a bad habit.
- The global cooldown is the real cost. Even at low Rage, that 1.5 seconds could have been a Sunder or a queued Heroic Strike that actually holds threat.
When is Rend actually good?
PvP is where it shines. A Rogue trying to vanish or a Hunter trying to Feign Death is stuck in combat while your bleed ticks, and a caster sitting down to drink gets pulled straight back up. Against a fleeing target you keep pressure on without being in melee range.
Leveling is the other case. Below roughly level 30 your Rage generation is thin and your other abilities hit for very little, so a cheap bleed you apply and then walk away from is genuinely efficient — especially when you are pulling multiple mobs and want damage on both.
Does Rend work with the Arms talent tree?
Arms has talents that improve bleeds, and Deep Wounds — the Arms talent that applies its own bleed on a critical hit — makes people assume Rend belongs in the rotation. It does not follow. Deep Wounds triggers for free off your normal crits, so you gain the bleed damage without spending a global cooldown on Rend.
If you enjoy a bleed-heavy Arms build for open-world play or duels, it is perfectly playable. Just do not expect it to compete on a raid damage meter.
Should tanks use Rend for threat?
No. Sunder Armor and Heroic Strike generate far more threat per Rage, and as a tank you are usually Rage-capped in a busy fight anyway. The only realistic use is a taunt-adjacent situation where a target is out of melee range and you want it tagged and ticking — a corner case, not a rotation.
Is Rend worth keeping on the bar at all?
Keep it, but on a secondary bar. It is worth a keybind for battlegrounds, world PvP, and dealing with anything that tries to break combat and reset. In a raid you should be able to go a whole night without pressing it.
