Pick Normal if you want to level, run dungeons and raid without the other faction jumping you — on the Normal ruleset, world PvP happens only by mutual consent. Pick PvP if open-world fights are the point, and Roleplaying if you want in-character play. Hardcore arrives after launch. There is no server to pick: you choose a ruleset, and each one is its own large ecosystem.
The four rulesets at a glance
| Ruleset | Who it suits | Key rule |
| Normal | Levelers, dungeon and raid players, anyone short on time | World PvP only by mutual consent; battlegrounds still available |
| PvP | Players who want contested zones and faction fights | Open-world PvP; Horde/Alliance balance systems in the style of Season of Discovery |
| Roleplaying | Story-driven players and RP guilds | In-character play expected |
| Hardcore | Permadeath fans | Not at launch; enclosed ruleset, a dead character can transfer out to another ruleset, including PvP |
Quick facts before you decide
- Forever is realmless. Blizzard's Deep Dive panel (September 13, 2026) confirmed you choose a ruleset, not a server, and each ruleset is a large ecosystem of its own rather than one giant world.
- No cross-ruleset grouping. Friends on Normal cannot party with friends on PvP, so agree on one ruleset with your guild before name reservation opens on October 27.
- Factions stay separate on every ruleset.
- Collections and Legacy Points are account-wide across Normal, PvP and Roleplaying. Hardcore is the exception: progress flows out of Hardcore, nothing flows in.
- Names are two-part (main name plus secondary name) and unique per region, so a ruleset choice does not affect whether your name is taken.
- You set a language preference and are matched with players who share it.
- Launch is November 4, 2026 at 3 p.m. Pacific; Hardcore follows later with rules still unpublished.
Should I pick Normal or PvP for WoW: Forever?
Go Normal if your goal is reaching 60, clearing the nine new dungeons and being ready for Barrow Deeps and Hyjal Summit when raids open on December 9. Riverglades and Mount Hyjal are new zones, and on a PvP ruleset new zones are exactly where the other faction camps. Normal keeps your evenings predictable.
Go PvP if world fights are why you play. Blizzard says the PvP ruleset gets faction balance systems similar to Season of Discovery, which should soften the one-sided population problems old contested worlds suffered from. Note that battlegrounds — Warsong Gulch, Arathi Basin, Alterac Valley and the new 15v15 Darkspear Islands — exist on every ruleset, so Normal players are not locked out of PvP; they only skip the unplanned kind.
Is the Roleplaying ruleset just Normal with a name?
Blizzard has not published the exact PvP rule for the Roleplaying ruleset, so treat that as unknown until the Q&A on September 17. What is confirmed is that Roleplaying is a separate ecosystem with the same account-wide collections and Legacy Points as Normal and PvP. If you want a community that stays in character, this is where it lives; if you only want a quieter world, Normal already gives you that.
Can I change ruleset after launch?
Only one path is confirmed: a Hardcore character that dies can move to another ruleset, PvP included. Whether a living character can transfer between Normal, PvP and Roleplaying has not been announced, so choose as if the decision is permanent. Your unlocked appearances and Legacy Points carry across rulesets either way, which makes rolling a second character elsewhere far less painful than starting from nothing.
Does "Classic Plus" mean the same thing?
Yes. "Classic Plus" and "Classic+" are community shorthand for World of Warcraft: Forever, the third experience next to Modern and Classic. When you see "classic plus which server type", the real answer today is the ruleset choice above, because Forever has no server list.
If you would rather have a vetted human pro handle the grind on whichever ruleset you settle on, PewPewShop is taking Forever pre-orders until November 4: leveling 1–30 from EUR 13, the Launch-Ready Pack (1–60, pre-raid gear and 500g) from EUR 219, and Battleground Wins from EUR 13 for players who chose Normal but still want honor. Self-Play options are available across every ruleset; no bots, no cheats.
